MOTI BAGH

PARK PROJECT

This project was based in the center of Raipur, India, the capital of the state of Chhattisgarh. Over the span of a few months, I researched the area's conditions and the culture in order to produce a design that would consider the seasonal monsoons and respond to social issues in the area. The design addresses three major social issues within India: Women's rights and safety, public protests, and religious acceptance.

Women face violence and discrimination daily in India and often do not go to parks because groups of men typically occupy large spaces. This issue was overcome through the design of a women's garden far from the active recreational area that men would gravitate towards and a guard house was located between the garden and the main entrance. There is also a women's building accessible through the garden to give women an additional space that can be secluded from men.

Laws in India have recently been passed making it harder for people to gather in public spaces in order to exercise their freedom of speech. The active recreational area doubles as an area for protestors to gather since is is visible to two streets, has seating and an open area, and has a large secondary exit adjacent to it.

Hinduism is the main religion in Raipur and Islam is the next most common, followed by Christianity. Recently there has been a lot of violence between religious groups, often followers of Hinduism towards muslims. Since there is a mosque in the park, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce religious tolerance. Within the event/religious space there are stones facing directly towards Mecca for people to lay down their mats and pray on. There is a slightly separate area for women to pray in as well.
