OVIEDO STREET TYPOLOGIES

WHERE

Oviedo, FL

WHEN

For this project, I was tasked with redesigning the public right of way in the historic center of Oviedo. In the first area, the road is to be turned in to a main boulevard, housing multi-use buildings. The Eastern side of the street is intended to have more foot traffic and had a central path between two rows of trees. After the second row of trees, I left a five foot wide sidewalk to allow people to enter and exit stores and restaurants easily. Within the area in which the building can be set, there is space for outdoor seating with a different paving detail to enforce the difference in function. Along this side of the street, there is a creek that runs underground. The client requested that the design reflect this feature somehow, so I created canals for the water to move through and specified a sturdy, blue-tinted glass to enclose the canals.

The second design shows the corner of North Central Avenue. and East Broadway Street. Due to the unique shape of the multi-use building and its location, I decided to create a plaza accessible from the street through a tunnel and adjacent to a parking garage. This plaza and tunnel would give businesses more options for storefronts and brings some liveliness to the center of Oviedo. The large sidewalk in the front of the building becomes the extension of the Florida Trail, which can then connect to the Cross Seminal Trail. The double row of trees would continue past the specified sections in order to help guide people to each trail.
