TURLINGTON PLAZa

The intention of this project was to redesign a busy plaza on the University of Florida campus. Currently, it functions as the free speech zone and acts as a corridor where people travel from dorms and areas with food to the location of a majority of the classrooms. The location is also directly next to one of the most used libraries on the campus. Due to its function as a free speech zone, this is where people go to hand out flyers for clubs and speak about current events and opinions. However, everyone who is trying to get to class is slowed down by this section of campus and it makes many people uncomfortable to walk through.

In the redesign, I wanted to emphasize its two different functions as a free speech zone and a corridor while adding an addition function, giving students a place to study just outside of the library. I was able to achieve these goals by creating a platform for protests and performances on the Northern portion of the site, keeping these groups out of the path of other people. As for the corridor, clubs and organizations that hand out flyers will likely stay in this area where they can reach more people, but the corridor is widened so that it is easier to avoid these people while staying on your route. As for the study area, there are 2 raised platforms adjacent to the library that is shaded and buffered by trees.
